The Invisible War

// Washington, United States
“After 'The Invisible War' was first shown, major news networks from across the US ran with the whole story.”
"Working with Kirby Dick is an amazing experience. He always hunts down the big issues of our times and drags them from their social closet. With 'The Invisible War' Kirby exposes the seemingly epidemic nature of sexual assault in the military. I think this film may well be one of the most powerful documentaries to be made in America. Since it premiered at Sundance, the film has been circulating through the highest levels of the Pentagon and the US Government."

The Invisible War is a condemnation of the way the military has failed to protect its servicewomen from sexual assault. Editor Doug Blush, talks about how Kirby Dick's film has become one of the most powerful documentaries of our generation.

Of the 3,158 officially reported sexual assaults to be investigated by the military in 2011, only 191 servicemen were ever court marshalled. The Department of Defense's own calculations for estimated sexual assaults the year before, was an incredible 19,000! "It's said that a female soldier in combat is more likely to be raped by an American serviceman than killed by enemy fire."

"Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering interviewed 70 women, with each interview lasting several hours each! We used the top twenty-four interviews for the film. I think with this film we have done something very rare for a documentary - we broke a major news story to all Americans about what is really going on in the military. Now we all know the cover up and how large the problem of sexual assault is at the Marine Barracks Washington. And that's all thanks to The Sundance Film Festival. After 'The Invisible War' was first shown, major news networks from across the US ran with the whole story."
