Take me in your arms

“I participated in the 4K Los Angeles Fashion Film Competition, where each individual lists his skills and a committee matches artists together in order to create a crew and provide equipment.”
“We had 4 days for the entire thing! Write, prep, scout, shoot, edit, color grade, sound mix, etc. I’m very picky by nature and obsessed with perfection, something that gets me in trouble a lot! I wanted to create something that I’d be proud to put on my reel, but I wasn’t sure I could do it in 4 days. I was lucky to have been linked to other incredibly talented and passionate artists and from our very first meeting it was clear that we were going to create something interesting.”
“We had no real references for this project really. I usually work in advertising where clients are very adamant on how they want the final commercial to look like that in many situations little is left from the original director’s vision. I am known for a certain visual style in my photography, which I consider my personal revolt against advertising and my journey into personal art, and I’ve never done any moving images in that style so I thought this was a good and appropriate opportunity to do something about it, something more personal, so I jumped at the opportunity.”

“This whole project was unusual and required an unusual approach! We were very limited with budget, crew, time, and short on manpower. Our first day on set was my first day seeing the location. I had a certain shot list in mind based on photos I had seen, and the story I wanted to tell, but it is nothing like seeing it in person. I literally was writing the scenes as we were shooting, mainly improvising and trying to create a narrative that meshes together in a concise and simple way. For shooting, I had no storyboard, so I was constantly referring to my written shortlist and blocking as I went and depending on the actual scene dynamics from light to angles to what my actors were doing. I’ve never worked like this before but it is challenging and can be lot of fun!”
“We used mainly Sony Cinealta F65, canon C300 MKII for the opening bathroom scene, and Sony A7R II for two closeups I shot in parallel while Mike Schilling my talented cinematographer was rolling on the F65. I edited and color graded the short. Took 48hrs of literally non-stop work to be able to meet the competition’s deadline as we went to shoot for 2 days and were left with 2 days for post.”
“I wrote, directed, edited and color graded using DaVinci Resolve in ACES. Due to the nature of the project I had one scene where we cut between F65 and A7R II footage, and I was able to make the shots blend together quite seamlessly. Shooting in SLOG was perfect for that as I find Sony’s color science extremely robust.”
“I enjoyed this project and process tremendously and we ended up winning the first place at the competition, so I’m extremely proud of the work my team and I did in so little time and resources. Extremely thankful to Mike Schilling my cinematographer and Jeremy Lynn my producer for their commitment and hard work. I literally can’t wait for the next one!”
