Project:

Quantum Love

Filmaker, Matic Grgic had a burning desire to bring a whacky world that he had visions of in his head to life. Matic talks about what influenced this world and how it all came to the screen.
“This was one of those projects, that just needed to happen. There’d been so many ideas, impressions and stuff pilling up inside, that I simply ached to translate them into animated form. In the end, it could have been a documentary or a book, or a cute couple holding hands that I saw on the street, that tipped the scale and made me start working. I really don’t know. Passion projects tend to creep up on me and seduce me, and I most certainly let them.”

“Crazy ass science was the inspiration behind it all! I know I’ll never be a quantum physicist, or a rocket scientist, but that sure as hell won’t stop me from getting inspired by their discoveries. I’m in love with quantum mechanics and have spent a lot of time reading up on it. If I were a cat, I’d spend my next 8 lives being a crazy scientist kitty.”

“Would you believe me, if I told you, that this project could very well be the definition of “smooth”. In between two commissioned project, I took time to sit down, plan out and execute the idea. It was finished in about 10 days.”

“I imagined the quantum world as an infinitely miniaturized version of our own world. But since life in the realm of subatomic particles must have existed for almost as long as universe itself, or at least, way longer than our own, then it must be old. So, I decided to make the abstract quantum world a bit more real and mix it with some old-looking, gritty and decaying cyber technology – which is still way beyond our reach and understanding. Sort of like a quantum cyberpunk world.”

“There was nothing at all that was unusual about my approach, but at the time, it all felt as a grand stylistic experiment. I didn’t have to invent any new techniques, I didn’t learn any new programs, I just had to find a visual style, that’d combine the abstract setting, a techno-driven society and a relatable story into a cute short film. I had help by using 3d models from www.archive3d.net and www.turbosquid.com and amazing photos from www.hubble.org. I combined all these elements, filled in the missing blanks, created and animated the characters, and stylized the result. All of that was done in Fusion, which basically was the technique.”

“In terms of post production, the entirety of the picture really was all me. I had help with the music and sound design by the amazing Matjaz Moraus Zdesar (www.moraus.tv). For me at least, the music he created, gets better with every viewing.”

“I enjoyed working on this project immensely. It could be the abstract cyberpunk setting, the cheesy “love-conquers-all” story or the high detailed styling. But all I know is, I want more.”
