Project:

Mingalabar Burma

Filmmakers, Duc Tran and Quan Doan are passionate about traveling and experiencing new cultures. When they learnt about a fire air ballon festival in Burma they decided that this would be their next travel video. Duc talks about how this self funded film took place.
“We chose Burma (Myanmar) to be our destination after reading about the Fire Air-balloons Festival in Taunggyi. It's one of the most dangerous festivals in the world, but also an exciting one. The fact that every year, there are people who get injured and even die when unfortunately giant air balloons decorated with candles and bringing along firework powder fail to fly and drop to the ground. And we put Myanmar on top of the list as we wanted to experience this country when it's not too touristic, which it's already well on the way of becoming a famous destination for travelers.”

“We are a team of two guys who spend all our savings on travel and equipment related to filming and other stuff. It was only a week before the trip that we managed to borrow an extra camera from a friend. That way we can have one each to shoot different angles and focal lengths. One more difficulty was that I used one camera for filming and another for taking stills.”

“We collected information from the internet to make a list of places we wanted to visit. The more we researched, the more we got excited. Watching 'Enchanted Myanmar' by Oliver Astrology on Vimeo inspired us even more. His editing style is a combination of visual and sound, which we also wanted to follow. And it's ungrateful not to mention Cee-roo, a master of the style.”

“We did nothing that could be considered unusual or especially tricky on this project. We really tried our best to take different angles on one subject, focus on actions/motions and try to link them together in the post-production, and match with the music. The two cameras we used for shooting were, one Sony 6300 - 35/f1.8 which we used for the handheld stuff and one Sony 6000 - 16-50/f3.5 coupled with a Zhiyun Crane Plus gimbal.”

“Quan did a great job of making the plan, balance our budget and make contact with people who could help us. We both shot together during the trip. I directed and edited. We asked our Burmese friend, who was also our host in Yangon, to record the voice at the beginning of the video.”

“We had a great time! The project was the first one we had two decent cameras for shooting. The quality of the images is better than last times as we only have one camera and used a Gopro for wide angle and steady shots. Visiting new places, meeting interesting people with different cultures and having exciting experiences, that's the enjoyment of traveling. And it's even more enjoyable when you can capture them and share with everyone.”
