“I shoot all sorts of projects from television commercials through to long and short form narratives. So it really is all about being creative and innovative when it comes to the visual story telling on any type of production.”

“I really enjoy working with progressive companies and directors when it comes to commercials. In the past, I have worked with well known brands like Energizer, Lytro and Square, who all understand the value that a strong cinematic style that can bring a new light to their brand.”

Nico van den Berg is a San Francisco-based director of photography with an emphasis on brand storytelling. His visual language, in terms of his commercials work, stems from a strong background in narrative filmmaking. Nico van den Berg shoots projects out of the Bay Area, New York, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and also L.A.

“Along with my commercials work, I also DP on a lot of narratives where the script really reflects my shooting style. I have developed a very patient style of shooting; one where there’s intricate choreography going on between the scene, the actors and the director. I love to see the whole story unfold within a single frame.”

“I have always seen the camera as being one of the characters in the scene. The challenge of choreographing beautiful compositions and lighting, and then creating intricate shots that bring the director’s story to life. I’m responsible for telling someone else's story through a lens and there really is nothing more gratifying for me.”

“Going forward, I am in the process of basing myself out of  LA and San Francisco. I’m looking now to expand my narrative career to include feature length films.”
